Goopi Gayan Bagha Bayan

I am so glad i watched it again!

It was one of those doordarshan days when they used to show regional cinema at 1:00 Pm on Sunday afternoons. On one such afternoon we had eagerly waited to watch Satyajit Ray's 'Goopi Gayan Bagha Bayen'. One of the rare children's(also) movie made in that era.

A scene which had etched in my mind was the part where Goopi and Bagha are lost in jungle and meet the ghosts, back then it was the scariest thing i had seen. The scene was then followed by a dance performed exclusively by the ghosts!. The dance was some thing which i remembered quite a bit of my childhood but without interpretation.

It is a Ray movie, he cannot leave without making a strong social message, can he? My little head could only see the dance then, but decades later i find that the dance still holds its interpretation in true sense to the current social scenario, only few performers have changed!

Care for it? here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDDQsgrZSnE .

  5. I remember waiting for summer holidays, back in school days in Calcutta. They used to show this movie as a part of their "Chutti Chutti" line-up. After more than a decade and half, some scenes are still etched in my memory. It's feels nice when someone reminds you about little things that brought you joy as a child :)

  6. Yup, I saw this as a child in Kolkata. It was then touted as a children's movie. My little head did'nt get any message either. Will have to see it again.
